Dear Fellow Physician,
The Proverbs that will be explored on this website are found in the Book of Proverbs, in the Old Testament section of the Bible. What can you expect to find as you read this volume? What follows is Derek Kidner's description found in the Tydale Old Testament Commentaries: Proverbs. "There are details of character small enough to escape the usual screening tools, and yet are decisive in our personal dealings. Proverbs moves in this realm, asking what a person is like to live with, or to employ; how he manages his affairs, his time and himself.” If you wish to become wiser, and have been looking for a mentor, it is here in Proverbs that the insights of the wisest of the ancients, Solomon, along with a collective of other 'Wise Men' are made available. Kidner goes on to state, " As one of the three books of wisdom, Proverbs presents various behaviors in stark relief, and challenges us to assess them by one criterion: “Is this wisdom or folly? This is a unifying approach to life, because it suits the most commonplace realms as fully as the most exalted. Wisdom leaves its signature on anything well-made or well judged, from an apt remark to the universe itself, from a shrewd policy (which springs from practical insight), or to a noble action (which presupposes moral and spiritual discernment)." In other words, it is equally at home in the realms of nature, art, ethics, politics, and even the practice of medicine, forming a single basis of judgment for them all.” As a physician, your training and expertise provide a unique palate of color for this ancient book of wisdom. As you write your impression of the various proverbs in a SOAP format you will be able to post them on this forum for other physicians to read, and respond to. As a fellow physician, your insights are particularly salient to the rest of us who are being reshaped, refined, and humbled in our attempts to serve. It is my hope that this journey through Proverbs will be a personal source of illumination, an encouragement to you and your colleagues, and provide vibrant revelation to the stories we often hear in our practice of medicine. Best Regards, |
